Alice is a young girl who has a passion for writing stories. She lives with her mom and her brother Midge, who loves to solve her riddles and listen to her tales. Her stories had a peculiarity: they all had to have an ending. That’s because Alice’s father, who had left her mother soon after she was born, told her something bad would happen if her characters didn’t receive a proper ending to their story, and his words were truthful. That’s why, when one day Alice went missing, Midge knew right away that that had to be linked with her sister’s stories. Moreover, the same day she went missing, he saw a girl that was the exact copy of Alice, except for the fact that she couldn’t speak and for her name, Gipsy Spindle. He also found in Alice’s room a talking cat, Tabitha, and that certainly made him suspicious. He soon discovered that they were characters from one of Alice's tales and that they were the only ones that could help him find his sister.
The other Alice is a novel written by Michelle Harrison and published in 2016.
I know I usually write in Italian but since this book is only available in English, I thought that was the language that suited this better. I really enjoyed reading this book, being a fantasy lover. There is a mixture of traditional tales, magic and the main idea is very unconventional and particular. I loved that in the last forty pages there was a mind blowing plot twist that turned the tables completely and made me stick to the novel. At first I thought that the title was somehow linked with Alice in Wonderland but then I realised it referred to the resemblance of the characters of Alice and Gipsy, but I wasn’t disappointed at all. I would recommend this to teens that love fantasy, a bit of magic and talking cats.
